A Dream Come True: My First In-Person VTuber Interview with Mamoru Hosoda! ðŸŽ¬ðŸ¦Š

YES! THEE MAMORU HOSODA!

For the first time ever, I had the absolute honor of interviewing one of anime’s most influential storytellers — Mamoru Hosoda, the visionary director behind timeless masterpieces such as The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, Wolf Children, The Boy and the Beast, BELLE and my personal favorite, Digimon The Movie (1999). 💫

If you’ve watched any of these films, you already know Hosoda’s gift for transforming deeply personal emotions into breathtaking worlds that feel both fantastical and profoundly human. His stories often explore family bonds, self-identity, and how technology and the digital age shape our lives — themes that have resonated with audiences across the globe; yes even Vtuber audiences.

At this year’s Animation Is Film Festival, Hosoda debuted his newest film, Scarlet — This is Hosoda’s vision of HAMLET, a version that continues his exploration of heart and humanity, this time through the eyes of a young girl navigating love, loss, and destiny. Without spoiling too much, Scarlet looks to be another emotional tour de force that fans of BELLE and Wolf Children will instantly connect with.

Having the opportunity to speak with Hosoda-san — as my VTuber self — was nothing short of surreal. This was my first-ever in-person VTuber interview, blending the worlds of digital and physical media in a way that perfectly mirrors Hosoda’s own storytelling philosophy.

We spoke briefly about his creative process, and his balance of his known well known combination of 3D (CGI) and 2D animation. .
